What is a manufacturing intelligence platform?

The layer that sits above ERP, MES and machines and turns their data into answers, alerts and actions.

The short definition

A manufacturing intelligence platform is an operational layer that sits above the systems already running your plant — ERP, MES, SCADA, CMMS, PLM, historians, spreadsheets — and unifies their data into one shared operating picture.

It differs from a BI tool in what it does after the chart. A BI tool renders a number and waits for someone to open it. An intelligence platform evaluates the number continuously, routes the exception to whoever owns it, and writes the resulting action back into the system of record.

Why plants end up needing one

Every function has already solved its own reporting. Production has a shift spreadsheet, maintenance has CMMS Dashboards, procurement has a Monday shortage list, sales has a status email. None of them reconcile, because each one defines the same terms differently and pulls from a different snapshot.

The cost is not the reporting effort. It is the meetings spent agreeing which number is real before anyone can decide anything.

What good looks like

One definition of plant, line, asset, product and order shared by every function. Every number carries its source and its calculation. Exceptions find people rather than waiting to be found. Actions land in the system that owns them, with an audit trail.

Critically: no rip-and-replace. If adopting the platform requires migrating off anything, it is not an intelligence layer — it is another system of record.

How to evaluate one

Ask three questions. Can one person connect one source and get one trusted answer today, without a project? Can it notify and write back, or only display? Can you leave and keep everything you built?

If the answer to any of those is no, the evaluation will take longer than the pilot should have.
